Discovery Island--Disney's Animal Kingdom
Discovery Island is the center of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, acting as a hub for every other park area except for Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Discovery Island is where you’ll find the spectacular Tree of Life, the 14-story-high, 50-foot-wide tree sculpture which is the symbol of the park. Take the time to really study the tree, where you’ll find 325 animal carvings along the trunk of the tree.
Discovery Island is aptly named because there is much to discover and explore as the trails and pathways take you over wooden foot bridges, through cave-like tunnels, and through dense, lush foliage. Along the Discovery Island trails, you’ll find several animal habitats housing kangaroos, black crowned cranes, lemurs, capybaras, flamingos, deer, and more.
Entertainment at Discovery Island includes the hilarious 8-minute, 3-D movie “It’s Tough to be a Bug!”, featuring lovable bugs Flik and Hopper from the Disney Pixar movie “A Bug’s Life.” The theater for this film is located in the Tree of Life root system! If you’re hungry while visiting Discovery Island, you’re in luck. You’ll find restaurants serving all your favorites including pizza, pasta, salads, and more. You’ll also find shopping opportunities at Discovery Island in the largest gift shop in Animal Kingdom and the colorful bazaar area.
You’ll probably find yourself returning to Discovery Island several times during your visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There’s just something about this area that beckons guests back.
